Group Work Case Studies: Modes & Auteurs

Towards the end of the semester, we break up into working groups for two projects that will focus 1) on a particular mode of remix video that we haven’t yet studies in depth and 2) the work of specific video auteurs.

Remix Video Modes

With your working group, you will research a specific mode or sub-mode of video remix that we haven’t yet studied in depth (for example videographic criticism, motivational remix videos, crack vids, lofi video, sports remix video, animatics etc).

Within your group, you’ll dig up and share with each other examples of your selected mode.

As a group, you will then create:

  • a definition of the mode on Google Docs. approximately 200-300 words
  • annotations on one video demonstrating how it exemplifies the key elements of your mode using the video annotation tool Video Ant.

We will combine these videos and annotations into a multifaceted picture of the modal landscape of remix video in 2020, which we will highlight in a class-curated Remix Modes 2.0 Screening.

Remix Auteur Modes

As a group, you’ll share video auteurs you’ve been drawn to, either before or during this class. Together, will explore trends in their work, analyze specific videos they have created, and consider how they fit into the larger remix culture landscape.

As a group, you will then create:

  • a definition of the mode on Google Docs. approximately 200-300 words
  • annotations on one video demonstrating how it exemplifies key thematic and stylistic foci of your Auteur using the video annotation tool Video Ant.

Together, we will curate a penultimate screening featuring work from the remixers you have chosen to focus on.

At the conclusion of these short case study projects, you’ll write reflections that consider the processes and how you contributed to and experienced the group work.
